Rey

A story to encourage others

Rey was born on a small island in Surigao City del Norte in 1974. When he was 21, his father passed away, forcing Rey to abandon his plans for university and move to Manila in search of work. He started as a vendor selling coffee and lemonade from a pushcart and over the years, he took on various jobs, including dishwashing, cleaning, and selling fish. Through hard work, Rey saved enough money to buy his own cart. In 2017, after facing some health challenges, he moved to Tondo to live with his sister.

In 2020, Rey’s life took a drastic turn when he discovered a walnut-sized lump in his neck. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, he delayed seeking medical help. By the time he finally went to the Philippine General Hospital, he was diagnosed with advanced thyroid cancer. Rey underwent radiation therapy in December 2023. Sadly, by that time surgery was no longer an option.

Reflecting on his experience, Rey regrets not seeking medical care sooner. He believes that if he had acted earlier, his condition might have been more manageable. Now, he wants his story to encourage others to prioritize their health and seek medical attention promptly.

Rey continues to face the daily challenges of his illness. His tumor has grown so large that he now uses diapers to dress the wound. Despite his resourcefulness, the cost of essential supplies such as mitamizole, gauze, peroxide, gloves, tape, and diapers is a significant burden.

Rey hopes that his niece Dimple's education will allow her to live a better live and that she can fulfill the academic dreams he once had to set aside.

We met Rey when his thyroid cancer was too far advanced for curative treatment. We contacted the world´s leading experts on thyroid cancer, but unfortunately, no one can attempt to operate at this advanced stage. odoVita has been supporting Rey with his everyday needs to clean and dress his wound and pay for his medications. If you would like to support Rey, please donate to odovita gGmbH and add the reference Rey.
